My Students

Our Room 14 Peacemakers are an extremely diverse group of students, coming from almost every continent. We have nine languages spoken besides English in our classroom, and every cultural background you could imagine! Because we are kindergarteners and first graders, we love to help each other. We assist each other in reading, writing, math, and science. We also help each other with our behavior. Kindness and peace are our everyday goals.

Learning skills for the 21st century is a focus at our K-8 school.

We are a research-based award winning elementary school that offers an alternative to the traditional neighborhood schools by focusing on the partnerships between staff, teachers and parents. Unique features of our program include multi-age classrooms (K-1). The curriculum is hands-on, meaningful and thematic. Children are actively involved in their own learning and are provided with daily opportunities to solve problems and use high level thinking skills.

My Project

An overview of the most important literacy practices for K-2 students will be presented, as well as more student-centered ownership of strategies for reading engagement and reading achievement, use of the most effective strategies for teaching student voice and choice, and authentic audience are also essential elements of the 21st century classroom, especially when it comes to text and topic selection for reading, writing and research. For the majority of my students, English is a second language. I need more opportunities to learn best practices for reading and writing instruction, in order to engage my students on a high level! This presentation/workshop is considered one of the best in the field.
