About My Students
My students are talented young adults who dedicate their time before and after school to our Marching Band. These musicians work 10-15 hours a week after school preparing for this year's competition. With such exquisite uniforms to be worn, it's important to properly take care of them throughout the year. We are preparing to participate in the Music in the Parks Music Festival at Hershey Park in Pennsylvania. This year we hope to take first place and Overall Best Marching Band.
My students have learned that it is not only responsible but vital to the success of our band to properly take care of their equipment and uniforms. They are 13 years old and understand the value of looking professional when participating in a competition. Currently our uniforms are stored in boxes and while at home, who knows! Students have learned that first impressions are one time opportunities to show people how great you are and your looks matter very much. While distributing uniforms this week several students expressed concern that our uniforms were wrinkled and poorly stored. They came up with the idea to get new garment bags so these items could be hung up nicely in our storage room, as well as, at the students' homes throughout the school year.
In Their Own Words
We are trying to create a better storage system for our Marching Band uniforms. It is important that we both play our best and look our best at this year's competition. There are two judges. One focuses on our sound and the other on our appearance and how well we march.
I am going to show my classmates that something as simple as properly caring for your clothing, as we already do with our instruments, will help lead us to better success. Our goal for this year's competition is to come in first place and also win the Overall Best Marching Band award.
This project is important to me because we take pride in the way we play and we should also take pride in the way we look. I love being in the band and especially the marching band because we get to travel a lot of and perform for many people. I enjoy making people smile and I will have great memories of these experiences when I graduate in June.
