My students need March Book 3! We are already received the first two books from other generous donors and now need to complete the series. The graphic novel is extremely appealing for all readers.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am excited to be teaching 4th grade science and social studies! We have a focus on Black History as our school focuses on being culturally relevant and focuses on engaging our students. The Civil Rights Movement is a key point in their learning about the power of the Black community. Their voices are needed in the current conversation around social justice and their is no better way to prepare to speak about issues than to look at the past to see who did it with grace, humility and power.
My Project
March allows students to learn about the civil rights era from the inspiring, John Lewis. The students will read all the books in the series to get to know the leaders of the time through John's stories. They will get to experience first hand a sit-in, Selma, and the Freedom rides.
The novel allows them to read but also see through the graphics just what like was like for the young freedom fighter.
He will not only share his historical experiences but also his personal reactions to the events of the time. Students will then be able to complete a project in which they put themselves into a historical moment and show how they would respond or react.
