Every year, during March (reading month), a national book tournament takes place for young adult novels. If my students have access to these novels, they can participate in voting for their favorites and follow along with the brackets each week as the choices narrow, and eventually, the winner is called. The tournament helps to build a culture of independent reading. These books are current, popular, represent a diverse array of voices, and build excitement around reading.
