Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My school is on the recent list of 100 best high schools in the country - because with few resources we get a high percentage into college - not always within four years, but our kids go to college. Having maps in the classroom will help them gain an understanding of not only where their country is in relation to the US, but also where their countries are in relation to the countries of other students in the class. It may seem trite to say that students face obstacles. But my kids really do. They are newly arrived in the country. Their parents do not speak English and they often must miss school to help out with doctor appointments or immigration meetings. Many of them have jobs after school. Yet, they are "kids" in the sense that they enjoy the same things kids all over the country enjoy. And, every year some of our students receive full scholarships. Again, something as simple as having a map I can pull down when a geography question comes up would be such a help. For instance, just today a student said he was from Moscow, and although most knew Moscow is in Russia, they had no idea of where in Russia. Another example: we spoke of Mt Everest - and everyone was clueless. Sometimes I want to discuss country sizes and there is no way to illustrate what I'm talking about. So, if you can, please consider contributing to buying maps for my classroom. I chose the maps from this vendor because there is a large map of the US and another of the world. I also believe there is a globe in the package. I thank you in advance.
