Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach middle-school English Language Learners in a low-income/high poverty school district. Most of my students have been in the continental United States for two years or less. My students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. I am hoping to better serve their needs by providing meaningful learning experiences and life-long lessons.
Having recently arrived to the United States, many students are here with only the bare minimum.
My students move often and may be living with a single parent, grandparent, or even a family friend. While the students are in school, I want them to have the opportunity and tools needed to focus on their education and provide them with the best tools to succeed.
By creating meaning, interactive lessons, I hope to inspire by students to reach their full social and academic potential.
My Project
All of my students are English Language Learners, most of them arriving to the continental United States within the past two years. The materials requested will help immensely with 8th grade Social Studies content focused on Geography.
My English Language Learners represent 25% of the district's population, from 28 different countries and 27 languages!
The beginning of the year highlights map making skills of the United States, a country that recently became their home. They will be utilizing maps in this project with outlines of geographical regions, graphic organizers, and individual materials to help each student better understand the climate, land forms, time zones, and more.
Students’ ultimate goal for this project is to create their own map by using construction paper, colored pencils, and outlines requested through this fund. They will be using the white boards to plan their ideas and the storage pockets to store their items as they build their map over several days.
