My Students

My students are ready to get their hands dirty. They are eager learners who enjoy hands-on activities. One of our state standards is to learn the regions and geography of the state of Georgia. Building a 3D map of Georgia out of Play Doh will keep them actively engaged.

My classroom is a very busy place.

We are always moving. My 2nd grade students include regular education students and special needs students. All of my students love learning and discovering new things. I try to have as many hands-on activities as I can. My school is a Title 1 school in a high poverty area.

My Project

As part of the Georgia Social Studies curriculum, we study the map of Georgia including the regions and geography. We have made paper maps and labeled them but let's face it, that is not too exciting. You might even call it boring. I would love to have the students work in groups and create 3D maps that include the regions and geography of the map. Using the Play Doh, the students would mold and build mountains and trees, rivers and beaches, and other components of the map. We will have a sharing time with other classes for them to explain their maps and display the maps in the school. I can just see their faces as they take pride in their creations and new found knowledge.

Being successful and creative will bring pride and a feeling of accomplishment to my students.

By creating a map with Play Doh, they will not only learn about their state but will take with them the knowledge that they can be successful. They will remember the facts because they shared and created them and they will remember their feeling of pride as they present the maps to others.
