I am a first year teacher currently teaching a fifth grade inclusion class (general education students and students with special needs) in Brooklyn, NY. Because I am teaching for the first time, I have few comfort materials to give to my students. One of the things that we need in the classroom is a carpet for the students to sit on. Our classroom does not have one, and all of the desks are made for third and fourth graders. Needless to say, my students are cramped into their uncomfortable desks for a good portion of the day, making it both difficult to teach and to learn. A carpet in the classroom will allow students to do hours worth of work (reading, projects, and group work) while being comfortable. At the same time, my students must prepare for the state Social Studies exam this year. Hoping to "kill two birds with one stone," I want to buy a carpet that has a map of the United States on it. This will help my children to learn about our country's geography, hopefully improve their test scores, and give them some much needed space on the floor. Funding for this will be greatly appreciated by me and my students. Thank you in advance for taking the time to consider this proposal. Sincerely, A carpetless first year teacher :)
