My Project
September is a special time for many of our students, with some of them coming to school for the very first time!
Our students live in the most ethnically diverse urban area on the planet, and it's also the most linguistically diverse, with at least 138 languages spoken throughout the borough of Queens, NY.
We always hope to make every student, and their family, feel welcomed as they begin the school year with us so that we can foster that lifelong relationship between home and school. What better way to showcase our communities' home languages within the books in our libraries! By including multilingual books in our classrooms, we create the opportunity for students and families to feel seen and valued within the school.
For this project, we are asking for copies of "A Hundred Thousand Welcomes" to be placed in all of our classroom libraries when students come in September. In this book, author Mary Lee Donovan and artist Lian Cho publish a collection of languages to teach readers how to say "welcome" in many different languages - many of which are shared within our student population. To include this book in our classroom community provides an opportunity to not only welcome our students to a new school year, but to welcome the diverse language and culture that each of our families bring by joining our school community.
