Our school is a K-7th grade dual-language immersion charter school in the DeKalb County School District of Metro Atlanta, Georgia. We are a multi-racial, multi-cultural, and multi-lingual community. Our Kindergarten students learn math and science while fully immersed in Spanish, Mandarin or French. They learn language arts and social studies in English.
Our students are special because not only are they immersed into a new language, but they are challenged to excel and be top performers in English language arts and math as well.
We utilize a variety of teaching methods to make sure these students are getting everything they need at school. The parents are also integral parts of the learning process and support the work at home that their children are doing in the classroom. The student bring home books and other class materials to show and share with their parents. It's a team effort!
My Project
Our Kindergartners are taught math while immersed in a different language. These concepts are also reinforced in English when they come to my classroom. By interacting with manipulatives, students can better learn concepts such as shapes, quantities, comparisons, as well as the English vocabulary for math.
Children learn best when they are able to fully understand new concepts with concrete materials before they are expected to understand the same ideas with symbols.
We need a Geometric Shapes Tub, Totter Tower and Playstix. So much is learned through interactions with math manipulatives. Children who have a strong understanding of these foundational concepts will be able grow their math skills more easily. Learning through play also makes math more fun and encourages the children to stay focused longer. We want them to LOVE morning math!
