Manipulatives Matter when Mastering Common Core Math!

My Students

Gone are the days of teaching through dull algorithms and mind numbing memorization. In the bold new world of the Common Core, we as teachers are faced with the challenge of bringing math to life for our students in ways that relate to the real world! Help me bring math to life for my scholars!

I teach 5th and 6th grade math at a open enrollment public charter school in an area still recovering from the impact of Hurricane Katrina.

All of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch for poverty, and many of them are behind grade level in math and ELA as they are beginning their middle school years.

My Project

I'm requesting lots of hands on manipulatives which will be used to help me let my students explore math concepts in real life scenarios. Rather than struggle with adding decimals, I can place bills and coins into the hands of my students as they learn to make the connection between adding money and adding decimals. Rather than trying to explain a difficult multiplying fractions problem, I'll be able to help give my students models to show how and why fractions are multiplied. The tools that I am requesting are all going to be used to help me bridge the gap between difficult abstract math concepts, and more realistic real world math which the new Common Core standards are pushing for understanding of.
