This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 5th grade math. By the end of the year, I hope my students have a passion for mathematics and for learning about the world around them.
My 5th grade math students attend Baltimore City's best public school!
In my classroom, students have been working on inquiry-based learning and academic discourse to explain their reasoning behind their math work. My students often come in at least a year or two below grade level and we work all year to close that gap and get them working on math skills that are on grade level. My students are hard workers and have made so much growth already this year!
My Project
The math manipulatives listed in this project will help my students learn their math skills from place value to fractions by giving them the ability to use their mainpulatives to make more connections to their learning. The place value tiles will help my students understand that place value can be represented by decimals while the fraction tiles will help students see how many parts make a whole.
Our school is also very big on cross-curriculular learning and the classroom library will allow my students to be able to read math texts while still working on their literacy skills.
I hope that students will learn the importance of reading in all content areas and this classroom library will help to make that happen.
