Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 9th grade Math A teacher in a public high school in the Bronx. More than 80% of our students are enrolled in a reduced or no fee lunch plan. My students love working with manipulatives. When math becomes something they can touch, move around and create, math becomes more approachable. Around mathematical manipulatives students let down their "I've never been good at math" guard and lose themselves in the hands on nature of the activity. I'm currently building my own manipulatives with construction paper, old hangers, paper cups, rolls of pennies, and string. They've been great, but they won't last longer than a few years before I be required to create them again. I'd like to build a collection of classroom manipulatives that will last longer than a few years. That's why I'm asking for a classroom set of geoboards, pattern blocks, Cuisenaire Rods, and plastic drawers to store the supplies in. With these supplies we'll be able to perform more inquiry based instructions. Students will be able to discover math principles on their own, rather then have me stand at the board to tell them about them. When I asked at the end of last semester for the students favorite lesson, many spoke of my mobile lessons, where students had to move around colorful shapes on either side of the mobile so that is balances. Each shape had a specific value and there was always an unknown shape somewhere in the mobile that students had to solve for. Without realizing it these students were learning how to solve for unknowns. They built their own rules and many weaker math students were excellent unknown solvers. If I had given them a math problem with x's they would have frozen and given up, but with the mobile suddenly they were equation solving experts. With your help I'll be able to do more mobile type lessons for this year and years to come!
