My third grade students love math, when they get to put their hands on it! Because I teach in a self-contained classroom (all subjects) I try to integrate literature throughout the day, especially in math. I would like to increase my library of literature that includes math. I also have math centers available for my students to learn with throughout the year. These centers help children learn concepts such as multiplication facts, probability experiments, measurement, and regrouping in addition and subtraction. Although my school, which is a Title 1 school, provides some math manipulatives, there are not enough so that all students can participate. In order to complete the math centers in my classroom, a tub of dice, plastic coins, geometric shapes, dominoes, fraction circles, tangrams, pattern blocks, counters, and number tiles. Engaging students in math through literature and then allowing them opportunities to explore math concepts with hands on activities will make math exciting and real for my students.
