Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day at math time I request my students to get out a pencil and their math journal. As our math lesson begins, students are required to either draw pictures or create their own math manipulative's out of paper as we do not have any math manipulative's in our classroom.

My students are a diverse group of learners with different needs and supports.

They are excited to learn but often lack the opportunities most students have in life. Our school is a low achieving school filled with a large amount of English Language Learners who live in poverty. Our school provides free breakfast, snack and lunch to all students to ensure they are receiving at least two meals a day. The needs of our students are very different and require creative approaches to make learning engaging and accessible to them.

My Project

Imagine walking into a classroom and seeing excitement over learning math. Can you picture it? Students huddled together, moving around fraction bars to create equivalent fractions. Seeing how math can become visual and not just numbers on a paper. Imagine laughter as they use the place value chips to create a number faster than their partner. What would it look like to have a student present their answer on the whiteboard using magnetic pieces and sharing their thoughts and problem solving skills with the class? Imagine math being interactive, fun and enjoyable instead of a chore.

An interactive classroom is a high achieving classroom.

Donations to this project will make my classroom a place where all students can learn, talk about their learning and show their learning in a visual way. Donations to this project will change my students' lives by providing them with the same opportunities as other children not living in poverty and help them communicate despite their language barriers. They will be able to see how money works with base ten blocks, etc.
