Our mission at my school is to prepare 100% of our scholars with the academic foundation and the character skills necessary for success in college, career, and life. We believe that every scholar can learn, grow, prosper, and have a positive impact on their families and in their community. We are thrilled to take on year five of our seven-year growth plan.
The 500 scholars at our schools come from diverse backgrounds and have created their own community and family at our school.
More than 99% of our students live in Fall River. A majority of the scholars are labeled Economically Disadvantaged by the state of Massachusetts. Many of our scholars live lives of food insecurity, housing insecurity, and too many are homeless. This has a large impact on not only access to education but also engagement in learning. For the 2018-19 school year, the middle school will enroll 300 scholars in grades 6 through 8. The high school will enroll 200 scholars in grades 9 and 10. Our school believes all scholars, with hard work and support, can excel academically and prepare for and graduate from college.
My Project
During the 2018-19 school year, my young mathematicians will be working tirelessly to close all gaps in mathematical learning. Countless research studies demonstrate that the use of concrete manipulatives in math instruction helps students develop a deeper understanding of abstract STEM based mathematical concepts.
This project ensures high engagement in mathematics.
Often times, scholars struggle the most in STEM classes. The fraction tiles will support scholars in their investigations of fractions, decimals, and percents. The counters will be used for instruction and practice involving integers. The geometric shapes will allow for scholars to determine different measures of geometric shapes. The shape blocks will allow scholars to work with shapes in new and unique ways Lastly, the dry erase pockets and markers will be used for independent and group practice. These manipulatives will ensure positive growth in the STEM field and hopefully cultivate a STEM passion!
