This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 21 energetic students who come to school each day excited and ready to learn. Our district is made up of 44 schools, 35 of which are elementary schools. 97% of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. I have 11 ELL students and some of them have just started learning English this year. While my students enjoy all subjects, math is definitely their favorite.

My students learn best when they can use manipulatives to actually see the problem.

They enjoy collaborating with each other on assignments that are difficult. They face challenges with determination and perseverance. Since the beginning of the year, my students have gained the confidence to know that learning math takes many attempts, and failure is ok.

My Project

Being a first-year teacher, I want to create a classroom where my students have as many resources as possible. These math manipulatives, tools, and support supplies would change their learning environment. It would give my students a chance to do more hands-on work in math. There are many new topics taught in the 3rd-grade math curriculum including multiplication, division, area and perimeter, data, and capacity. These materials would not only make learning these new topics less intimidating, but also more enjoyable.

The materials I have chosen for this project will give students the opportunity to have more choice in their learning.

Students will be able to have more options for materials in order to fit their needs. In my classroom, I have seen the power of choice. Students who are given more options, feel empowered and are more excited to learn and get work done.

The fractions materials will help my students to visualize their work especially my ELL students. Visualizing the factions helps to make the concepts come to life. The write and wipe boards will let my students to do problems at their seats while allowing me to give them immediate and relevant feedback. My students play many multiplication games using dice to help them learn their facts. Using the dice and the arrays chart, my students will be able to master multiplication to tackle the 3rd-grade curriculum. Graphing paper not only will help my students to practice their graphing, but also multiplication arrays, area, and perimeter.
