Manipulating Math

My Students

We are an inner-city classroom in a large, urban district in Ohio. Math is pretty tough for us, but we are really starting to persevere and challenge ourselves. We are part of a research study through The Teaching and Learning Collaborative to prove that learning to code increases math scores.

We need hands-on experiences to connect the concrete to the abstract and strengthen our mathematical reasoning.

We LOVE coding activities, but some of the activities are just too abstract. Please help this year be the year we catch up and get back on grade level.

My Project

It is very difficult to understand math in abstract forms. Research shows that students must manipulate objects multiple times to move from concrete to abstract thought. We don't have the supplies we need to foster this understanding, and we need your help.

My 4th grade students need to count, turn, flip, slide, and weigh objects to fully comprehend what is being asked in word problems.

The manipulatives we are requesting will help us do this. Effective mathematics education needs dialog. With manipulatives, students can discuss and work through a problem together and achieve greater learning. This type of hands-on learning allows them to develop and use mathematical language.
