My students need 12 sets of math manipulatives which will allow them to explore multiple methods in solving problems using deeper thinking skills throughout the year.

"I love to learn in order that I might teach" ~Seneca... This quote sums up the promise I made to myself and my students. Although I have advanced in my professional learning, our school has very limited resources; therefore, my students have access to very few math tools to assist their learning.
My students are a very special group of kids with the unfortunate issue of living in a high poverty area in a small Alabama town.
They desire to learn and only dream of having access to any type of technology. Any time they are permitted to work with the limited amount of manipulative materials we have, they take very good care of them. Although the students, faculty, and even parents work together to take care of our school, there are many things that need replacing. Even with the ceiling tiles breaking and some air conditioning units overflowing with moisture, these students have pride in their school and themselves. They don't have much, but they are so appreciative of anything given to them.
"Thinking outside of the box" requires stepping outside of the textbook. As a constructivist teacher, I believe all students deserve the opportunity for active and engaging learning opportunities. The math manipulatives I have requested will enable my students to deepen their thinking in the area of math. For instance, most students know that 2 + 2 = 4; however, can they explain why or how? Or, did they just memorize a "math fact"? According to Marilyn Burns, one of today's most highly respected math instructors, students learn through exploration as opposed to traditional "skill and drill." In utilizing the Alabama Course of Study standards as a primary guide for instruction in conjunction with the math menus written and inspired by Marilyn Burns, the math manipulatives will enhance student learning and allow them the same opportunities as students in high income schools.
"I saw a twinkle in the eyes of my students when they opened that new package of unifix cubes and began working together to solve problems..." This statement was one of a dear friend and colleague who also teaches in a high poverty area.
Don't you think it's amazing how something so simple as unifix cubes would excite a child who might not even receive a birthday present? By donating to the students in my class, you are helping our future senators, doctors, and even grocery store cashiers.
