Manipulate the Math, Man!

My students need manipulative such as timers and Magnetic Write & Wipe Boards that they can use to interact directly with the math concepts we are planning to practice -- and master!

My Students

Witty, rambunctious, in-the-moment and energetic, my students bring as much enthusiasm as they require to the classroom! They keep me on my toes, and I am a better teacher because of them.

I have never met a more cheerful group of pre-teens in my life.

A simple "Good Morning!" routine is able to wrangle even a half-smile every day, and I count that as a success.

Each day they help me grow as a signer, and each day I hope to help them grow as our future.

'But wait, those hands in the picture are awfully large for pre-k - 2nd graders...' You're correct! While my students are in 7th grade, their academic skills level around the early elementary grades.

My Project

Ask an adult today what 36 plus 48 is and they'll know to carry the 14 made from 6 to 8 to the 3 and 4 and.... We'll, and so on and so forth.

Math is being taught very differently nowadays.

New curriculum challenges kids to understand not to just the how of math, but the why! Building this foundation helps set the students up for success when applying mathematical concepts in the real world!

My students need these math tools so they can continue strengthening their own skills. They require more than drill sheets and "just memorize it!" ideology.

Using the magnetic base ten set gives my students the opportunity to model their own thinking -- and combined with the magnetic white board allow them to share their thinking with their peers. The magnetic fraction strips also give my students a way to physically relate what a fraction means, instead of just memorizing that the bottom is how many pieces of that size, and the top is how many pieces they have. The timer set and Fellowes laminate sheets will help me prepare and coordinate effective centers that with last the test of time (get it? timers?) and hands!
