Help me give my students four 18 x 18 pillow inserts and covers, a brightly colored blanket, a wall tapestry, a diffuser and 8 essential oils, three window crystals, 150 paper teacups, and a tea kettle.
I teach in our school's Mindfulness Room. My room is open to all students throughout the day for them to take advantage of mindfulness activities in order to develop self-regulation and executive function.
Our diverse population of students come in eager to learn coping strategies to deal with the myriad of negative emotions and exhaustion they bring to school or experience at school.
Our school is predominantly a low-income population with respectful students that come to us with some very sad stories. Many of these resilient students are eager to learn these mindfulness coping strategies so they can graduate and become productive members of society.
My Project
These articles will continue to enhance the Mindfulness Room at our school. The Mindfulness Room was started three years ago and I was recently hired to be the new teacher there.
This cherished room is where students ambitiously come during the school day if they are not in a frame of mind to learn.
The ultimate goal of the Mindfulness Room is to develop self-regulation and executive function in students in order to make them self-sufficient. My short-term goal is to have them return back to their classroom in an improved mental state ready to learn.
As I welcome students into my room, I want there to be a calming, accepting presence. As I sit with these receptive students leading them through a breathing technique, yoga, meditation, or exercises I would like to offer them a warm cup of tea to quench their thirst for calm. I want every one of them to feel that their presence is welcomed through the aura of the Mindfulness room.
