Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
For the 2020-2021 school year, I am one of the virtual teachers in an inner city high school. I teach about 60 students from my computer screen, and I love them dearly. They bring such personality into my classroom, unmuting to share parts of their day, or showing me different family members. I never thought I'd hear "brb going to cook some eggs" on a daily basis! Even in a pandemic, I am one of the lucky teachers that gets a good portion of students to attend their classes everyday. They keep me involved in their lives, and they are always so polite whenever they join or leave our virtual classroom for the day.
"Miss, I have a book I want you to read now, since you're always talking about books."
I want to reward my students for all of their hard work that they've done this year by giving them a library full of engaging books. They love books on murder/mysteries, and the scarier the better. (they know I love magical and fantasy books and they take great joy in trying to scare me with details about the books they're reading)
My Project
I want to provide books that my students can enjoy regardless if they are in person or virtual. They are supposed to read at least 20 min. a class period from a book they enjoy, and they are tired of reading from online PDFs. Many students do not have access to their own books at home. Some students only have a handful of books, and it can take days to schedule with their families a day for them to come to the school and pick up books. My classroom was only supplied with one bookshelf, and the books on there I had to scavenge from one of the storage rooms in the school. When the students come back in the fall I would LOVE to be able to surprise them with at least a bookshelf full of stories that they want to read and enjoy.
I want to give my students the opportunity to fall in love with reading, regardless of if they are virtual or in person students.
If they could have a wide variety of books, they will be able to read in their small groups and share what they are reading about with their peers. We could potentially do book groups or selections where they advertise what they like about each book for future students, so they're hearing from the voices of their peers about what is enjoyable to read.
