I teach a split 3rd/4th grade classroom in a low income neighborhood. Many of my students have repeated the third grade because of low test scores and need a lot of extra practice using manipulatives in order to make math concepts more concrete.
My students lack life experience when it comes to measurement. Rarely are they asked about how much time has passed, how much of something should be put into a recipe, or the distance between two objects, or weight of an object. As a whole our school does poorly when it comes to measurement and I believe it is because our students miss out on these experiences.
I want to take a more hands on approach to measurement. Students need to feel the weights in their hands and pour water from a pint jug into a gallon jug. They need to time regular activities to acclimate themselves to elapsed time. I think these materials will help them make measurement more concrete in their minds.
