This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 6th graders are curious, funny, and engaged in their learning. Despite the many challenges they face outside of school on a daily basis, they come to school ready to participate in challenging work. We are focusing heavily on literacy this year, and my students are enthusiastic, cooperative, and invested in their own learning.

Due to many factors (including a Pandemic that has caused countless hardships and interruptions to education) a lot of my students don't get much exposure to consistent reading or writing outside of school.

Daily practice of these activities is VITAL to success both in school and in all aspects of life. My students are willing to put in the work to improve their literacy skills, they just need the tools to do it!

My Project

My students spent almost a full year at home during remote learning during the pandemic. Many had limited access to reading material, if any. We have a LOT of work ahead of us to get them where they need to be.

Manga and graphic novels have emerged this year as an all-around class favorite.

Students are reading, re-reading, trading, and recommending the limited supply I currently have. Students from other classes are also stopping by to borrow books!

With more reading options and some flexible seating to use during independent reading time, I know these materials can give a huge boost to the work we continue to put in towards our literacy goals.
