My Students

Do you remember visiting your school library? Did they have books you were interested in reading? I'm sure you can imagine the frustration if the books you really liked were either never in or not in the shelves. What if you could help give students more books to choose from? Adding 50 new manga titles to our library's collection will do just that.

Many of our students do not live near a public library so they rely on their school library to meet their reading needs.

In fact, our library is one of the most popular places in our building. The library services over 700 students from different backgrounds, with a variety of reading interests, and a range of abilities. Having a comprehensive collection is essential to meet each student's individual needs.

My Project

This year, our library taught our 6th, 7th and 8th grade students about manga for the first time. Our lesson touched on the history of manga (including classic art examples), the difference between manga and anime, and different styles and genre within the manga format. The students were very excited! By the end of the week our small collection was depleted because so many titles had been checked out.

Our lesson showed a clear gap in available resources so building our manga collection is an exciting opportunity to respond to student interests.

All of the discussion of manga sparked a wave of requests that we cannot meet on our own. Funding our project would help give students access to a variety of new materials.

The new resources will anchor a new manga collection in the library that will be separate from our graphic novel collection. With the additional titles we will better meet students needs and create access to a wider variety of manga titles.
