This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Miss...there is NOTHING to read in our library!" "I like reading, but I can't find anything to read." "Do you have any more books?" Such are the disgruntled musings of the 9th grade English students I teach in an inner city of NY? Despite the statistics, which state the children are reading less and less, my students LOVE to read!
The only problem is...they DON'T love the books I hold in my small classroom library. I teach in a low-income, high-needs school in which close to 80% of our students receive free lunch. My school lacks the funding to provide engaging books for my students, and my students find themselves unable to connect to the classic literature that has little to do with their Hispanic culture.
What my students do LOVE to read, however, are manga comic books! I have seen numerous self-declared "non-readers" guzzle these books down in one reading sitting due to their engaging content and compelling pictures. My students feel empowered by these novels because they can relate to the trials and tribulations that the high school teens in these books face. What's more, my students become more willing to read my "boring" classical literature after discovering how interesting books can be!
PLEASE empower my students and turn them into Manga BOOKIES by providing them with popular manga series books. You will be giving them such popular series as Naruto, Death Note, and Code Geass. My students are clamoring for these exciting texts. A picture may tell a thousand words; but a picture and words together - oh the Manga Bookies you will create!
