Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at my school are constantly amazing me. Many are from economically challenging back grounds yet they have a drive to succeed, work hard, grow, and go off to college. However many of the students my library service are struggling readers and need an opportunity and materials be successful.

Graphic Novel are the answer.

There are numerous articles that have been written that sing the benefits of graphic novels. "These readers can quickly begin to develop literacy skills such as general reading comprehension, inference, and building new vocabulary, as they leap into the narrative without struggling with the format of a traditional novel."

A student's favorite quote from a manga book. "Freedom is something that you need to actively acquire. It's not something that's given with no strings attached. To be free means to take responsibility, and to prepare yourself for what's to come."

I would like to purchase several graphic novels to help bring more students into the library, and provide reading opportunities for reluctant and struggling readers.

My Project

Graphic Novels and Manga are a great opportunity for struggling readers to become interested in reading. They are also a wonderful resource for English Language Development. "Students benefit from the clues that pictures provide to reinforce the story's meaning, enhancing comprehension and vocabulary development"

The intent of this project is to provide books that will catch the attention of students that would not look twice at a book.

I have seen many students that would never touch a book pickup a graphic novel/manga. They usually then come in day after day to and checkout the next book in the series.
