Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students who attend our school are a mixture of different economic and cultural backgrounds. Students are eager to learn about their classmates backgrounds and interests. We are a very inclusive school and our mission is to support one another no matter their race, socio-economic status, ethnicity, sexual preference, or nationality.
We truly are a family from different walks of life.
Students come together through their interest and discussion of literature, which is why my students created a list of Manga books in hopes of starting our first Manga club in school. This club will be student led and allow students to learn about different cultures and their friends' interests. My students and I and are very excited to start this club!
My Project
Today, I met my students and they expressed their interest in manga, which is a style of Japanese comic books and graphic novels. To my amazement, my students opened up about how these graphic novels changed their lives. It is my hope that with your help, I can provide them with the materials they are truly interested in, which will allow them to connect through literature. Students expressed interest in forming a magna club, which I will be helping them with. Students will truly become immersed with Japanese culture. In addition to creating a club, I can use these novels as mentor texts, asking students to re-create dialogue, images, or scenes in the text. Also, students who did not know what magna was expressed their desire to learn about a new culture and style of literature. These are books which represent student interests and I am eager to provide my students with these works! Manga will allow my students to start a club, become more engaged with literature, and allow them to explore Japanese culture.
