Mandela Project - Get Sharpie

My Students

My students are incoming freshmen that have been accepted into the Program in California Exploration at JFKH. During the summer, they attend a summer program at California State University in Sacramento. The PACE program uses the university classrooms to give the students a taste of what college life is like.

Because of this summer program, students begin to feel comfortable with other teens their age, receive informative and fun lessons in English and Social Science.

They have a great summer experience with their 9th grade teachers.

My Project

Each year, the PACE incoming freshmen attend a three week summer program where they focus on academic writing, geography, reading and experimental writing. I teach the experimental writing class and my first lesson is to create a cover for our composition books: 100 Thinks That I love. The last assignment is a symbol Mandela that rejects each students' sun and moon symbol.

The students create the most beautiful representations of themselves and ultra fine sharpies provide the finishing touch on their work.

These supplies will be used to create the composition book cover, the summer Mandela but they will also be used in the classroom through out the year.
