My Students

My school services children from economic depressed communities. The majority of my students live in poverty. The communities are under-serviced. Many households don’t have power; however, some get limited source of electricity by using solar panels and generators. Currently, our entire student population receives free meals, twice a day, and free transportation back and forth between the school and their homes.

Nevertheless, my students are eager learners.

They come to school with heavy baggage from home, but they would put that aside and enter the learning zone that I provide them with, trying to make the best use of the day.

Regardless how the environment wraps around them like a cocoon, under my guidance, my students would try their best to learn how to break through the confinement, awaiting to turn into beautiful butterflies. For example, after I teach them critical thinking, from understanding to application, they would attempt to use their thinking skills to resolve the issues hindering their schooling and pursing happiness in life. They learn to struggle through their obstacles and move forward one inch at a time. Although the progress is diminutive, my students are patient and determined.

My Project

Being a teacher on a remote island, I found students are short changed of resources, opportunities, and supports in many ways. I, therefore, decide to start a Chinese course this school year, to give the disadvantaged children a chance of attaining this foreign language to become competitive at the job market and global competent in this rapidly changing interrelated world, as well.

Besides language, the cultural aspect is also a focus for the course.

Traditionally, Chinese calligraphy is a form of art; Mandarin learners should learn how to write the beautiful characters with brushes. It is a hands-on learning strategy. To expand students’ learning scope and to enrich their experiences in learning Chinese language and culture, I intend to have students work on calligraphy writing in my class. I am asking for the starter sets for this activity and the needed papers associated.

In fact, my students have been using the watercolor sets – the color paints and the brushes for drawing pictures – to write characters on the old newspapers. I think it is time for them to use the real brush that is appropriate for doing this type of writing. With the proper brushes, I can teach them how to put down the different strokes for the words. I let them experience calligraphy writing by recycling what we have, just to initiate their interest and to introduce them to the activity.

With the starter sets, they will get to rub the ink stick with water on the ink stone. I can image how excited they will become when they see the ink coming out of the rubbing. Their hearts will jump for joy; the learning will take place between their giggling and laughter and surprises. That’s a learning journey they will remember for life.
