This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
For the second year in a row, I will be having the privilege of re-teaching students. Many of my former third graders will be joining my class as fifth graders in the fall. Given the dramatic world events, they had a unique end to their fourth grade year.
As a result, we are spending the first half of our school year apart and need to get creative with our resources.
I am requesting read alouds for our digital lessons as well as books for our classroom library. Last March, my students unexpectedly left my classroom for the last time and many of my books went with them. While I am still optimistic that many books will trickle back in, I also know it's time to restock some fifth grade favorites!
My Project
I am requesting new mentor texts for read alouds and chapter books for our classroom library. The chapter books will be placed into our classroom library for use when students return to the classroom and the read alouds will be read during our digital class meetings.
Many of my students are struggling with managing their emotions during distance learning, so a bulk of the read alouds are from Julia Cook and focus on these executive functioning skills.
Mental health is just as important as academic skills; children need help coping with a changing world. Read alouds that build functioning skills and empathy are necessary components of digital learning.
