My Project
Sixth grade math topics provide a perfect vehicle to teach students how to manage money. Students in my math classes often come with little to no idea of what it means to save money or be financially responsible. To help teach students the basics of financial literacy, we participate in a year long simulated classroom economy where students set goals and learn how to manage the money they earn weekly through performing their job as a math student. Students learn about interest, budgeting their earned income, saving for a goal (and retirement from sixth grade), and spending responsibly. To help aid in learning, students will use the card stock to make checkbooks to store their checks used with our online banking system. Clear zippered pouches will help each student organize their banking supplies including pens, checkbooks, class cash, and account cards. Fraction tiles will assist students as they learn about fractions, decimals, and percents- important skills financial literacy. Scientific calculators will assist students with calculating interest for savings. Students will also have the opportunity to manage their own markets and fill various classroom roles such as banker and property managers. Clipboards will provide students a place to keep data and information for their jobs. Using a classroom economy simulation will help me in striving to make my sixth grade students financially literate while showing them math does serve a purpose in their daily lives.
