This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As the music teacher of the only non-audition based music school in New York City, I strive to give my students every opportunity. Our school was opened less than 12 years ago with the mission to give all students, regardless of their prior knowledge, an opportunity to learn and grow in the arts.
95% of the students are of black or Hispanic heritage, and over 80% qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch.
Although many of our students' math and reading skills fall below grade level, they are intelligent, passionate, and all performers at heart.
My Project
As the school year continues my students have explored several different instruments, chosen their favorite, and are now creating their own small ensembles to perform with. This is always a favorite time of year, because "student choice" runs the show, and students take real ownership of their performances.
Several instruments are 'out of commission' because we are missing parts, and we currently have no ukeleles to utilize in class.
Your donation will allow students who want a ukelele to get their first choice, it will put our electric guitars back into circulation, and after I fix our floor tom with our new drum key, I can supply our students with the appropriate sticks to not over power the rest of the class, or damage the head of the drum.
