Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In our class, we strive to foster and believe in "a world where many worlds fit," a place where every everyone's opinion is valued and people are judged by their character and actions, not their identities. Being different in middle school may be difficult, but my students know that diversity is a gift.

My students attend an urban public middle school in a low socio-economic area in southern California.

They are a group of bright seventh graders who derive from hard-working families and who have to balance their rigorous academic work while tackling the challenges of living in a community plagued by gangs, violence, drug abuse and, the largest problem of them all, poverty. My students, regardless of the issues they face on a daily basis, have goals, drive, and most importantly they are hungry for knowledge. They possess great aspirations for change in their neighborhood, our country, and the world. Through their writing, they've expressed a vision of a brighter future, not just for them, but for all children.

My Project

By being able to view the film, "He Named Me Malala," my students will be able to learn more about a magnificent young lady, not too much older than they, who has been able to transform the world and those around her with her actions. They will be able to witness the story of hardship and resiliency. My students will be able to make connections between Malala's struggle and their own personal and social battles from which they "bounce back" every single day with the simple fact that regardless of their hardships, they keep returning to school thirsty for knowledge.

Malala's story is one that resonates with the experiences of many of my students.

The hardship she endured and her courageous character will allow my students to see themselves as survivors and fighters for what is right. Knowing her story and that of others like her will make a great impact in their lives and, most importantly, it will help them work on their individual and collective creation of "a world where many worlds fit."
