My Project
This project will help my students learn about the power of DNA and how all living things are related by inserting the jellyfish DNA into a yeast cell and causing it to glow.
It will be awesome for my students to put a blacklight on the petri dish full of yeast cells and have it glow GREEN!
This project helps my students learn about reading DNA using DNA electrophoresis labs. The items in this project help prepare my students to do DNA electrophoresis and read DNA in real time. For example, the micropipette practice will help the students set up the DNA labs and read the results. It also allows the students to get lots of practice in a low-stakes environment, perfect for learning complex skills useful in life after school.
My goal for this project is to teach my students about how DNA affects all of us in our everyday lives, and how we have harnessed DNA to make modifications to cells, improving our world. This will lead to some great ethical discussions in my genetics class.
What makes my students special is that most come from a disadvantaged background and are trying to become better students and people through education. Most of my students have never used some of the equipment we are trying to get, and I hope that the things we are introducing will expand their horizons as to what is possible.
