Making Words in a Hands on Way

My students need play dough, ink pads, storage containers, flip chart paper and craft bags.

My Students

I teach K-6th grade special education students in a Title l school located in a beautiful country setting. The students are young, so they love to walk into an environment where they feel safe and can have fun. They are excited to learn and come to school each day. Our best learning is done through hands on activities. The students love to make and create, sing, talk and have fun. Our attention span is short, so we need to work in small time frames followed by hands on activities.

My Project

These materials will be used daily for center stations during ELA and Math activities. Students are working on letter and number recognition, making words and counting. Students will be provided with different opportunities with these materials. We have foam letters that they will be able to stamp in the ink and then make words on their papers. With the play dough the students can roll out the dough and then use our classroom stampers to press into the dough to practice spelling words, learning letters and sounds. Containers are always needed to make for easy clean up. Visuals for the students are always a great help when teaching word families, poems and providing models. With the flip chart paper we can hang up the information in the room where students can look to for reminders or help when they are working. Providing a differentiated setting will help in keeping all students engaged and learning.
