it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Many students in underserved communities lack access to swimming instruction, putting them at a higher risk of drowning—one of the leading causes of accidental death among children. In Oakland, access to pools and affordable swim lessons is limited, leaving many students without the opportunity to learn a critical life skill.
For School Without Walls, I am taking my students beyond the classroom to provide free, high-quality swimming lessons led by certified instructors from Oakland Parks and Recreation.
This initiative will help them gain confidence in the water, develop essential water safety skills, and experience swimming in a supportive environment. I believe that learning to swim will open their experiences of the world, allowing them to take part in activities like snorkeling, kayaking, and other water adventures—especially on vacations in their future.
What We Need:
To make this possible, we need support to cover equipment such as goggles and kick boards.
Providing goggles and kick boards will help students feel more comfortable and confident in the water by allowing them to focus on learning proper technique without the distraction of water in their eyes or the challenge of staying afloat, making their swim lessons more effective and enjoyable.
By supporting this project, you’re helping students gain:
Life-saving water safety skills
A new sport that promotes health and confidence
An equitable opportunity to experience swimming, regardless of background
A foundation for future experiences in water activities, broadening their opportunities in life
Your donation will directly impact students by providing them with the instruction and resources they need. Every dollar helps make this program possible and gives students access to an invaluable life skill.
Help us bring this opportunity to our students and create lasting change in their lives. Donate today and support their journey into the water!
