Making Waves (Light and Sound) in First Grade

Help me give my students books and hands-on materials to engage them in the study of light and sound.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Schultz's classroom raised $311

This project is fully funded

My Project

My first-grade scientists love to learn! We will study light and sound and we need engaging materials to make the learning come alive. Many of these students come from homes with few resources, so we have to make every minute and lesson count at school. I have chosen books and resources that are age-appropriate and specific to the first-grade science standards.

The books, flashlights, prisms, tuning forks, and other materials will be used to complete different experiments that will help the students see the scientific principles specific to light and sound.

We will utilize the flashlights and batteries to show how light reflects with the mirrors. The prisms will be used to show the concept of refraction of light. The tuning forks will be used to model sound traveling in waves when placed in water. Each of the books will be read aloud, as well as be available for independent reading during other times of the day.

I look forward to sharing the materials with the class and seeing how excited they are about learning science and sharing the information they glean with each other and with their families and friends. Hopefully, they will be building a strong scientific foundation based on their interactions with these age-appropriate resources that will last a lifetime, as well as give them excitement about continuing to learn and grow as scientists who engage with the world around them. Thank you so much for considering our class project!
