Our school is approximately 1/3 African-American, 1/3 Hispanic and 1/3 white. We have challenges at our school, but there is so much untapped potential. Many of our students have the opportunity to be the first in their family to attend college.
Our student population is very diverse.
Many of our students' families may struggle to meet basic needs. Their focus should be on learning not worrying about having basic supplies. All students should have access to the supplies necessary without feeling ashamed because they cannot afford them.
In English Language Arts classrooms, developing stronger readers is our main focus. Students learn by example and by doing. Having a document camera will allow me to better demonstrate how to talk to the text, and I'll also be able to have students show how they talk to the text.
Making thinking visible develops stronger reading comprehension.
Students who learn visually will certainly benefit from making this process come alive in real time. A projector and a computer are wonderful, but to truly interact with the text nothing beats paper and pencil. By adding this tool to what we already possess, the possibilites are endless.
