My Students

The mission of our school is to develop its students to be knowledgeable, productive members of a global society through an education that promotes cultural awareness, skillful use of information, personal renewal, and both individual and community path-finding for the twenty-first century. It is the first school in New England to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) (grades 6-10) and Diploma Programme (DP) (grades 11-12) for all students. IB programmes develop the intellectual, personal, emotional, and social skills needed to live, learn, and work in a rapidly globalizing world. Our school uniquely supports “IB for all” for an urban, low-income population. Our school is a Title 1 (85%), low-income, high-needs school located at the edge of Boston’s Chinatown neighborhood and therefore has a high proportion of Chinese-American students; other significant groups include African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Somalis, Arabs, and other recent immigrants.

My Project

Math in 2018 is no longer just about solving problems on individual worksheets. Students in my classroom are working to build their teamwork and communication skills as they work to solve open-ended problems like building Barbie ziplines, designing gingerbread houses, interviewing teachers to design systems of equations that model their coffee consumption, and estimating the heights of statues using trigonometry.

In 2017, we made a DonorsChoose project to get trapezoid-shaped markerboard activity tables.

Arranging pairs of tables into hexagon shapes allows them to easily draft and revise their work in flexible groups. The shape of the table allows for different group sizes, and the markerboards are much better for collaboration than worksheets or notebooks. Students enjoyed building the tables when we received them. Our group work and problem-solving has already improved by leaps and bounds from when we had to use long rectangular tables.

Now the students can easily talk, share work, and draft ideas. To keep our "making thinking visible" going, we would love to put up student work on the walls via chart paper, grid paper, and big post-its. This will enhance our discussions and sharing of problem-solving strategies. We also want to laminate manipulatives, formula sheets, or rubrics for hands-on work or to preserve student work for display.
