Making Their Way to Fifth Grade Level Reading!

My students need third grade level books to motivate and empower them to reach grade level reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are special because they are the ones that will change the world. They are curious about the world around them and they want to make a change. My students, although 5th graders, come into my classroom with varying grade levels. Some enter in as beginning readers, some as seventh grade readers. In my class it is my job to level the playing field and ensure that they all get an equal opportunity to the quality education they deserve.

You need to see the look in my students' eyes when they get a new book to truly see the capability they have.

It may only be about 24 hours until they come to me with a finished book and a hunger for more worlds they can read about. They are truly amazing and are the smartest, most hard working 10 year olds I know.

My Project

We have done it once, let's do it again! DonorsChoose.org has helped me reach my first grade and second grade readers, and now it is time to reach my third grade readers! 50% of my students are within third and fourth grade level reading. This means that they have to power to reach grade level reading by the end of the year, they just need more opportunities and more books to help them get there.

I've seen how the right set of books can completely turn an unmotivated student into an eager reader and thinker.

My students have seen how others are now in love with reading and that has inspired them to work harder! I saw such a change in my classroom when Amulet, Smile, Babysitter's Club, and Salem Hyde made their way into the hands of my readers and I know these books will do the same for my third grade level readers! These books were especially listed by my students as books they wish were in my library.
