Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my group are the youngest and most enthusiastic learners. They are only four years old. They are anticipating their educational journey to begin.
Unfortunately, their first school experience will be like no one ever envisioned it to be...online through distant learning!
They will not have the traditional first day of school like we all experienced. They will not feel the knot in their throat as they attempt to say "Hi," to a new friend, They will not feel the butterflies in their tummies or the sweaty palms as there is no classroom to walk into this year.
Not this year.
The majority of these students are English-language learners that come from families that are experiencing economic limitations now more than ever. Some of them have been affected by COVID-19, the possibility of displacement from their homes and unemployment. Resources and experiences will be different for these students.
My Project
As my students prepare to begin their first educational experience online, I need to be prepared and equipped with the necessary technology tools.
Teaching English-language learners requires effective and modified instruction.
The document camera and the tablet will benefit my students as I will be able to scaffold and differentiate lessons for them in small and whole group instruction. The white board will assist to model concepts of print like writing from left to right, top to bottom and how letters and words hold meaning. The headset will help me focus on my student's oral language skills as it helps reduce unnecessary background noise. This equipment will help me virtually teach developmentally appropriate skills to each individual student's strength whether it is visually, auditory or kinesthetic.
As I am providing these students their first school experience through distant learning, I would like it to be purposeful, engaging, and an exciting one.
