Making the Teacher's Secret Notes Accessible

My students need binders and bins to keep my lecture notes and resources organized as they have access to them when they are absent or are unable to keep up with notes.

My Students

Did you ever feel that the teachers had secret notes and resources that you, the student, weren't privy to? Imagine the look on my 8th graders' faces when I tell them my materials are not secret, they are available for them if they need to access them to support their success!

I have three 8th grade US History classes and two English classes.

Our students come from diverse backgrounds in terms of ethnicity as well as economic resources. I have EEN (special education) students of all ability levels in my class as well as ESL (English as a Second Language). Whatever resources I can provide to teach organization and foster independence in my students prior to entering high school should have long lasting benefits. The more access to curriculum I can provide for my students the better chance we have in decreasing the achievement gap, increasing test scores and graduation rates.

My Project

As an 8th grade teacher my job is to prepare students for high school. That includes teaching them the curriculum necessary to obtain the next level as well as teaching them self-advocacy and independence. Students who need to access my materials-including lecture notes, hard copies of my power points and booklets need to easily access these materials. Having these materials in labeled binders & bins for students to independently access when they have been absent, couldn't keep up with note taking, realize they missed some information or have lost some materials puts the responsibility of taking the initiative and fixing the issue on the students. It's a great way to foster independence, responsibility and self-advocacy which are critical skills as they mature & head into high school.

I don't have my own classroom so my materials must travel with me from classroom to classroom.

Having easily identifiable binders and bins which are labeled and organized will be the best way for students to access the information they need and find it as I travel between rooms. I can't change traveling between rooms, but I can make accessing the information easier for my students so that they get the biggest benefit not only this year but hopefully throughout high school and beyond!
