I have five 8th grade US History classes. Our students come from diverse backgrounds in terms of ethnicity as well as economic resources. I have EEN (special education)students of all ability levels in my class as well as ESL(English as a Second Language). Whatever modification, especially visual, which I can provide these students really assists in their comprehension of history and our country. There is a push for students to become more adept at non-fiction reading, which includes gaining information from an atlas. The more access I can provide for my students the better chance we have in decreasing the achievement gap and increasing test scores and graduation rates.
