My students need Take It to Your Desk Problem Solving Cases, Build-A-Story Problem Flip Books, Elementary Math Instant Learning Centers and Hands-On Math Teaching Kits.

I teach on a military base in Texas where the students are military dependents. At any given time 50% have a parent serving in a hostile environment. I teach 2nd grade in a Title One school where 80% of the students are on free or reduced lunch.

MANIPULATIVES--These are the most essential tool in teaching math to our students. They cannot make the connection between numbers and word problems without being able to act out the problems. It is hard to teach money or fractions without having the students hold and manipulate to get a full understanding. The supplies I have currently in my class are only enough for a small group of students to work with.

These kits are expensive, however, they contain enough manipulatives where each student will have their own supply without sharing with their table group. This will only help foster a true love for math in my students. The learning centers will allow them to work by themselves and learn to think for themselves. The flipbooks will allow them to learn how to write word problems as well as solve them.

These resources will enable my students to work independently and hopefully help them make the connection between the concrete and the abstract. My students need a strong foundation to which they can build all other math skills on. Without a good foundation, they will struggle to survive. PLEASE HELP MY STUDENTS MAKE THE CONNECTION!!
