Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
So much art to be made, if only we had all the proper tools. My students are in an intro to art course, where we study a variety of types of art, but we are in need of knives and cutting mats to create some of the artwork we will be studying.
The arts, as always, are hit the hardest.
My students are resilient and generous, though. They persevered and were patient as we crammed 40 plus students into a small classroom at the beginning of the year (with at least 10 students sitting on the floor due to lack of desks and chairs). They have donated some supplies out of the goodness of their hearts, seeing there is a need. They would gladly donate more, if they could afford to.
My Project
There are a variety of paper arts we want to explore and experiment with, which require cutting with precision and accuracy, best accomplished by X-Acto Knives. Some of those projects will be used to study positive and negative space, shape, pattern, and contrast (all of which are part of the Elements of Art, the basis of all art curriculum).
One specific project we want to create is a Notan - based on a Japanese style of art in which the artist cuts shapes and fine details from paper and lays them out like a mirror image of themselves. This project is an excellent way for students to grasp the concept of positive and negative space.
With this course being an introduction to art course, my students need a well rounded art curriculum, exposing them to all the visual arts.
Having the supplies we need will aid in the curriculum being effectively taught and open my students' eyes and horizons to all sorts of new ideas that they may not have experienced or discovered otherwise. Thank you in advance for all your support in helping my students get their art on.
