I need to further my education to develop and transform the current curriculum to reflect and meet the needs of the diverse populations of my students.
Our classroom consists of 27 eager to learn 5th graders. Our classroom is filled with lifelong, diverse, enthusiastic learners. We motivate and encourage one another to be ourselves and to learn from one another. No one is afraid to make a mistake because my students know that this is how we learn. A phrase often heard in my classroom, "Wow, Ms. B.! Learning is fun!"
We are a large urban public K-8 school with close to 1,000 students in the heart of the city.
Many of our students receive free lunch due to economic hardship. We are extremely caring and supportive of one another. It is a great place to be!
My Project
Eight days will be comprised of several educational workshops and school site visits in major South African cities. The workshops will focus on how educators instruct youth from multiple communities, ethnicities and life experiences. Educational consultants and activists will impart their knowledge that will in turn help to develop and transform the current curriculum to meet the needs of the diverse population and value their identities.
South Africa: Educating a Diverse Nation Professional Development will provide learning opportunities that will transform the curriculum to reach all learners.
The professional development will help me to have an understanding of diversity, inequality and political power globally. Esteemed South African educators will teach me about the contributions made by individuals from diverse and/or underrepresented groups, effective teaching practices and ways to promote positive cultural awareness. I want my students to be empowered by their own identity. I want them to see themselves in the curriculum.
A transformation of the curriculum to a culturally aware curriculum needs to happen. The students will benefit in numerous ways. The transformation of the curriculum will enhance self-confidence, start a conversation about differences amongst students, bridge home-school connection, build a strong teacher-student relationship, value self-identity, increase academic success and so much more. I hope to learn how to create a curriculum that acknowledges, responds to and celebrates fundamental cultures that offer full, equitable access to education for students from all cultures.
