Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it and who often have to move in with relatives after a job loss. There are some families that are homeless and need more assistance. Many also come from military families. We have many cultures represented at our school. The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Our staff continually goes above and beyond to help their students. The school is based on the idea that we are all part of the same team, and we work towards helping all students. Almost 100% of certified staff work as mentors during their personal time to give students who need extra help the attention they need. We are working hard to make sure our students are prepared for the future. We have added a Makerspace and are now working to extend our STEAM clubs, and we are encouraging girls to participate in STEAM activities.
My Project
Education has been changed by STEM Education. As a counselor, I work with K-5 students. I also work to promote family engagement in the process. The more the family is engaged, the more the learning is reinforced at home. Parents like understanding what their children are learning, many feel intimidated by what their children are learning.
Skills such as creative problem solving, STEM, and basic skills are are areas that STEM building sets can assist with.
It is easy to see these skills in use within the events, as we can also see them progress in these skills throughout the school year, as they transfer the knowledge to their classes. We align experiences to district and state standards for learning.
We started using STEM materials in my weekly STEM Club. Demand is growing, so two sessions of 50 students will be offered this year. In the past few years, we have added a yearly family STEM night in addition to our Career/STEM day (a full day packed with STEM experiences for over 20 years). We include parents in all of these events, and many are active teachers of STEM skills. They often buy the materials to use at home after they see how easy they are to use.
We have built up a collection of STEM materials. We want to include more materials that are not based on technology and that use the student's imagination. We want to add materials like Creative Kids Flakes, Engino Discovering STEM Structures, and Soyee Magnetic Blocks. These especially help with engineering fundamentals.
The materials are also priced so most families can afford them. These sets will build their STEM skills and self-confidence in a fun format is a win-win for the students, families, and school.
