Making Social Studies Great Again

My students need social studies materials that offer engaging literature at a variety of reading levels. The multimedia resources will provide an alternative to the traditional paper-pencil assignments.

My Students

I have the pleasure of teaching students with emotional disabilities and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. When I say pleasure, I really mean it! My students are just like any other student their age except for the fact that they have a difficult time relating to peers, making and keeping friends and creating positive connections with adults. However, my students desire to fit in and just be "normal" because they are very in-tune with the outside world and how they are perceived. While these emotional deficits can be challenging to teach, I have been successful in creating a positive learning environment where teaching behavioral and academic expectations, having a structured routine to include social skills instruction and using positive reinforcement has made a world of difference. I learn right alongside my students and I could not ask for better students to join me in this human experience!

My Project

When asked what their least favorite subject is, most of my students will answer, "Social studies!" I am asking for donations for social studies literature and multimedia materials in order to engage my students in the importance, and life relevance, of learning social studies content. I desire to use engaging materials that will positively submerse my students in the learning process.

My students, because of their diverse social-emotional deficits and needs, have gaps in their learning due to time spent out of the classroom due to misbehavior.

My students desire to learn and have a natural curiosity about life. I want to teach my students that learning academic content can be fun and interesting! Social studies was my favorite subject in middle school, mostly because my teacher was so passionate about teaching the content. I do have a passion for teaching, especially real-world, relevant content, and I wish to teach my students not just information, but teach my students how to use information to draw a conclusion using their own intellect and reasoning skills. Having the right materials to teach lifelong knowledge and problem-solving skills is a must!
