Social justice aims to create a society where all individuals have equal rights, opportunities, and access to resources, regardless of their background. Racial Equity specifically focuses on addressing the disparities and inequalities that exist due to systemic racism. These are concepts that can be difficult to teach to students with extensive learning needs. However, it is important to find ways to reach all students, especially those who are often part of social injustices, such as students within special education programs. Inspired by the impact of the Everyday Racism mobile app, an anti-racism app for children was created. However, to ensure access to all of my students, we need another touch screen tablet (iPad) as our other devices are being designated as communication AAC only.
The touch screen iPad will allow all students, even some with limited fine motor control, to access this supplementary curriculum that aids in the teaching of social justice and racial equity themes.
The program is supposed to take about two months, but is adaptable so I can meet the specific learning needs of my respective students. This innovative application is a wonderful tool to teach students how to identify and challenge non-race-based and race-based exclusion.
Students with disabilities often face discrimination, exclusion, and inequity, which is why educators need to find ways to ensure all students have access to this knowledge. There are many applications available that will help make abstract concepts more understandable for student who are often literal in their world view.
